Silay City in cooperation with Brgy. Cinco de Noviembre Barangay Council, Liga ng mga Barangay and Hugyaw Silay, Inc. will memorialize Cinco de Noviembre 1898 event on November 5.
Mayor Jose Montelibano said that the celebration will honor the heroic deeds of Silay ancestors, the hacenderos and the jornaleros, who joined forces to defeat Spanish authority in Pueblo de Silay 113 years ago through a bloodless revolution which paved the way for Negros to gain its independence from Spain.

Leading events of the day include Thanksgiving Mass at San Diego Pro-Cathedral (6:00 am), ‘Hugpong sa Kahilwayan Program’ at Cinco de Noviembre Marker (7:00 am), Heroes March from the Marker to Plaza Olympia (8:00 am) and raising of the flag (8:15 am), declaration of the opening of Sabor Silaynon Cooking Competition, Food Sale,Pinta Silaynon, DepEd Pista Sinadya sa Kahilwayan and Salo-Salo sa Plaza.
‘Pamahaw Silaynon’ for sale will be made available for bikers, bloggers, road runners, hataw groups and church goers who will go to the plaza before 7:30 am.
Special feature at the plaza are the assorted food and delicacy from Sir and Ma’am Restaurant, El Ideal Bakery, Mariel’s Bakery, Silay Native Delicacies Producers and the barangay traditional cooks.
Cooking competition at the plaza covered court is in three categories – veggies, meat and seafood.
Afternoon activities include drum and bugle corps competition for elementary schools (2pm), awarding ceremonies (6pm), band concert (7pm), fireworks display (8pm) and a celebrity show sponsored by Cong. Albee Benitez (8pm).
The visual art work of Silaynon artists will be also displayed for public viewing at Sen. Jose C. Locsin Cultural and Civic Center.
Cinco de Noviembre Celebration marks November as Silay Heritage Month and opens the week-long fiesta of San Diego de Alcala, patron saint of Silay. (PR)
