There is an unending debate of whether or not to legalize all forms of gambling in the Philippines. The majority of Filipinos are Catholics, which consider gambling a sin. Still though, a lot of Filipinos are still fond of gambling. Some forms of gambling are considered illegal like Jai Alai and Jueteng, yet people still play. You can say “gambling is more fun in the Philippines.” Filipino gamblers usually have a penchant on betting on fighting animals despite protests from animal rights groups. Fiesta celebrations would often include events such as cock fighting, carabao fighting, etc. Card games and mahjong are also a common pastime among Filipino gamblers.
I know somebody from Iloilo who goes all the way to Bacolod just to play at Pagcor Casino. When I asked him why not just play online instead of traveling all the way from Iloilo. His reply was, “I can tell you one thing, gambling on www.partycasino.com is fun, but it simply does not compare to actually being at the casino. Here I can actually stare the dealer in the eyes, as well as try to decipher the other players at the table”. I guess for a gambler, it’s not about winning but the thrill of playing the game.
I also know how to play several card games, and even mahjong, but I only play with friends. I’ve been to the Pagcor Casino a few times and tried my luck on the slot machines. Unlike some of my friends, who seem at ease at betting their money, I would get nervous about either winning or losing, playing mental head-games that would reduce my confidence. As much as I enjoy playing
card games, I’m just not into gambling.
Those who have the money can gamble all they want but unfortunately, not all people who gamble have money. If you look at the profile of the people who line up at Lotto outlets you would realize that most of them are those who barely have enough for their daily needs, yet spend their money on Lotto tickets hoping to hit the jackpot.
Legal forms of gambling, such as government run casinos and lotto franchises, contribute to our government’s coffers through their income and taxes. If you are a gambler and can’t help being one, at least patronize the legal ones. You might feel a little less guilty knowing your money has somehow helped in the government’s social programs and projects.
