It smells sweet to those who love it but it smells like hell to those who don’t. Durian, the king of tropical fruits is also available in Negros Occidental. It is usually in season this time of the year so you don’t need to go to Davao to have your fill of the creamy, delicious and sweet smelling fruit. Obviously, I am one of those who love this tropical fruit.
The vast plantation of ECJ Farms has the most number of durian fruit trees in Negros Occidental. When the fruit is in season, you can buy them from ECJ farmworkers who sell them just outside the Negros Organic Market. Sometimes, Ting-Ting’s Restaurant at Shopping has an eat-all-you-can durian promo at reasonable price.
Durian outside the Negros Organic Market is currently priced at P80/kilo which you can still haggle with the vendors. If you have the time and money, it is highly recommended to visit the ECJ Farms pasalubong center at Hacienda Candelaria in the town of San Enrique. There you can buy durian jam, candies and ice cream. The ice cream is a personal favorite.
Postscript:
Thanks Estan for your comment, most common variety available in Negros through ECJ Farms is the TD4.

any exact address for Hda. Candelaria and the commissary store in San Enrique? I heard the peak harvest is in August.. Would totally love to go there
Glady says
Hi Bert! That’s the only address they don’t need one since they own the hundreds of hectares surrounding. When you reach San Enrique town, just ask for directions. Local folks would know the way to ECJ Farms.

one thing that you left out, and is quite important, what durian variety are they growing?
Glady says
oops…i did ask but forgot to write it down. 😀

I had the opportunity to visit the ECJ durian farm back when I wasn’t hooked to it yet. They have this eat-all-you-can come on to everyone who cared to try the fruit. But you had to pay for whatever you plan to take home.
We’ve been loyal patrons of the durian sellers near the Negros Organic Market. I’m sure kilala na nila ang buranguson na intsik nga gabakal tag 10 kilos nga durian last June, hehehe.

I don’t what’s the status of the marketing center sg ECJ now. The last we were there last Dec. when CamSur DTI-CARP visited medyo gamay ang sulod. I hear medyo nag slowdown sila sa processing. Problem with workers bati ko. Tsismis a. hehehe
Hehehe… 10kgs gid ya? Sya lang makaubos? Btw, daw gusto ko na i-try ang buriring.

ECJ Farms is in Pontevedra…the orchard actually. The processing of fruits into canned delicacies and other preserves is done in part in Hda. Candelaria situated in the boundary of the towns of San Enrique and Pontevedra. To buy Durian you do’nt have to go to the farms.I recommend a place in the town of Pontevedra,it’s in the Brgy. Recreo, first barangay from the town proper going to Hinigaran. You can find it displayed in a kaing just in front of the gate of the house …well, maybe a consignee of ECJ.There you are pips…go buy that durian there. But if you would like to also see the orchard go go go…and eat your heart out for that “eat all you can” offer(seasonal) on fruits like durian and rambutan at ECJ Farms.

The orchard is so big it has areas in several municipalities/cities such as Pontevedra, La Carlota, and San Enrique. Thanks migs for that helpful tip on where to buy durian aside from the ECJ Farm. It’s also nice to visit their marketing/pasalubong center since there are other products for sale there too.
