Batchoy weather in March? It rains when it’s supposed to be summer and the weather is crazy enough to give us a tropical depression Caloy two weeks ago and again it rained last weekend. Such are the realities of climate change.
I’m one of those people who don’t welcome this crazy weather with open arms. We are supposed to go to the beach but here we are, holed up in our room, wanting to sleep until the rain is over. But we have to go on with our daily life no matter what weather nature feels like having. Thanks for the little joys we experience best during these bouts of craziness from nature through our rainy day comfort food Batchoy.
Nothing beats the rainy day blues than the delicious smell of piping hot, rich soup stock, poured over a bowl of noodles with slices of pork and pork innards, sprinkled with fried garlic and crushed pork cracklings, topped with one whole egg, and if you’re lucky enough, bone marrow for your heart’s delight! (No pun intended)
Super Batchoy saves the day!
I’m glad there’s a Super Batchoy near us at the Villa Angela East Block. This branch is more sanitized for a mall environment. There’s also another branch in front of Bacolod Pension Plaza. However, I still prefer the grit and grime of the original Super Batchoy branch at the Central Market.
It’s often full anytime of the day, where customers mill around looking for available seats and waiters scramble to take orders and clean tables. You can also hear the activities at the kitchen – cook and helpers scurrying around, clinking of glasses and cutleries being washed, and the chilling sound of the scissors as they cut up pork into pieces. You can take a peek to make sure it is indeed pork.
It’s not dirty that will make you raise a red flag to the city sanitation office. It’s just your typical batchoyan beside a wet market. They didn’t bother to have it air-conditioned because people who go there really don’t care. Super Batchoy at the Central Market has been around for years and people like it just the way it is.
So, next time nature throws us off-guard with this unpredictable weather, or anytime you feel like having that hearty bowl of batchoy for comfort, off to Super Batchoy you go! You’ll surely ask for extra kaldo, notwithstanding the heat.
