The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental confers ‘adopted daughter’ title to Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz in a ceremony held at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City on Friday (Sept. 10, 2021).
The conferment was given to Hidilyn Diaz by virtue of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution 0751 passed during its special session on Sept. 9, citing the achievement of Diaz of winning the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Diaz said she has fond memories of Bacolod City, recalling that she joined the National Open in 2004 and the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 held in Bacolod City.
Hidilyn Diaz made history when she bagged the first-ever Olympic Gold Medal for the Philippines in the women’s 55kg weightlifting at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and she also achieved two Olympic records. Her win ended the 97 years Gold Medal drought for the Philippines in the Olympics.
Hidilyn’s historic feat has inspired the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental to strengthen and widen its weightlifting program in order to find and develop athletes with potential from the province. The SWP has donated weightlifting equipment to the provincial government in anticipation of the launching of the province’s weightlifting program.
