The Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism is inviting everyone to join the 2nd Go Bike Pilipinas 2008 at the old Provincial Capitol, Bacolod City, on Nov. 15.
Dr. Ma. Luz Vicenta “Viki” Guanzon, chair of Go Bike Pilipinas 2008 ,said registration is free and will start at 4 a.m. The fun ride will start at 7 a.m. and will go around Bacolod City. As part of the event, a free blood sugar and obesity screening will also be conducted. Free T-shirts await the first 500 registrants. There will also be raffle prizes and free snacks after the ride.
Bacolod City Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia was invited to signal the start of the fun ride while Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue will also address the bikers after the ride. A message from biking enthusiast Senator Pia Cayetano will also be read to the bikers.
The Go Bike Pilipinas was launched last year as part of the program of the PSEM to celebrate the World Diabetes Day declared by the World Health Organization every Nov. 14th, through the efforts of the International Diabetes Federation.
Go Bike Pilipinas advocates proper diet and regular exercise, like biking and walking, in order to curb down the rising epidemic of obesity and diabetes, and other lifestyle diseases, such as high bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels which lead to heart disease, hypertension, and osteoporosis. Biking is also being promoted as an alternative cheaper and greener mode of mass transportation applicable to the Philippine setting, and as an answer to the rising fuel prices and frequent jeepney strikes.
Go Bike also aimed to lobby legislators locally and nationally to pass laws setting up sidewalks and bike lanes in all towns and cities. Just last November 5, a biker who was killed by a speeding vehicle in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City. In memory of Benjamin Moraña, the bikers who will join the fun ride are set to wear black armbands.
