After yesterday’s 6.2 magnitude earthquake rocks Negros, 64 aftershocks were recorded by PHILVOLCS as of 12 noon yesterday. Only 18 of these aftershocks with magnitudes between 1 to 3 were felt. At 4:56PM yesterday another 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded by Phivolcs.
The 6.2 quake which hit off the coast of Cauayan, Negros Occidental was tectonic in nature and was caused by the movement of the Negros trench. Intensity 5 earthquake was felt in Southern Negros Occidental cities of Sipalay and Kabangkalan and the town of Cauayan.
Thousands of residents along the coastal areas of Sipalay, Cauayan and Hinoba-an immediately evacuated to higher ground for fear of Tsunami. Phivolcs earlier ruled out the possibility of a tsunami but advised residents to be alert.
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring islands of Panay, Cebu and Mindanao.
