Nurturing a Love for Reading

Staying faithful to its mission, Big Bad Wolf Bacolod Book Sale continues to make books accessible while seeking to nurture a love for reading in children and adults alike. Adventure, mystery, self-help, biographies, etc. – the Book Sale can satisfy a bibliophile’s cravings. From children’ story books to academic literature, there is surely one for everyone.

Encouraging my daughter to love reading books was a challenge. Like most kids of the alpha generation, she would rather spend her time with her cellphone, indulging in multimedia content. I have to bribe her with a dinner in her favorite restaurant just so she will come with me at the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale. I told her to pick whatever book she likes and I will buy it for her. She is more inclined towards art so she chose a a self-help book with a really nice graphic arts. I was very happy looking at her sniffing and flipping through the book, loving the scent of a newly opened book.

What The Books You Read Say About Your Personality

Do you have a habit of acquiring books without reading them? The Japanese call this habit Tsundoku, I do admit that there are books I bought that I haven’t read yet and as I see my personal library expand, I noticed the common themes. I often buy books under gardening, science and technology, food, self help, and Filipiniana. I was very happy to see a section for FIlipino authors in this year’s Big Bad Wolf.

Here are our book haul this year.

  1. Earth Heroes by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara – features three inspirational Earth Heroes whose love of the natural world inspires them to make a difference: Jane Goodall, Greta Thunberg, and David Attenborough! This boxed gift set of three hardback books from the internationally best-selling Little People, BIG DREAMS.
  2. The Perfect Tree by Glory Moralidad –  is an educational story that will teach children the importance of saving the environment. It is in English and Hiligaynon.
  3. I Know an Artist by Susie Hodge –  introduces some of the most inspirational stories of friendship, love, creativity and shared passions in the world of art. Each of the 84 illustrated profiles reveal the fascinating links between some of the best known artists.
  4. You Will Leave a Trail of Stars by Lisa Congdon – features inspirational quote, lesson, and piece of advice brought to life by Congdon’s signature illustration style, making the book a beautiful gift or keepsake.  (This is Gabby’s choice)
  5. The Water Book by Alok Jha – this book is about the power and importance of water and the role of water in shaping our civilizations and why it is the key marker in our search for life in he solar system.

I hate to admit it but I love children’s books, perhaps more than my daughter. I love looking at the illustrations, and reading them aloud with feelings.

Spreading the Love for Books

The Big Bad Wolf Books was founded by Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng in 2009 and first launched in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the words of the company’s founders, Big Bad Wolf aims to cultivate reading habits, increase English literacy worldwide, and build a new generation of readers by making books more affordable and accessible to everyone.

This year’s Big Baad Wolf book sale includes a corner for Filipino authors mostly illustrated children’s books. It’s already a good start and I hope they will have more titles in the future.

You will also have the opportunity to spread the love for books by donating books to children who have limited access to books. I let my daughter drop the Subtraction Ready To Learn Activity Book to the donation box so she will understand that owning a book is a privilege that not everyone enjoys.

Visit the Big Bad Wolf until September 29, 2024. In addition to books, there are also merch such as pins, posters, and eco bags. For more information regarding Big Bad Wolf’s current and upcoming Book Sales, you can visit their website or check out their social media accounts (Facebook | Instagram
