7th Kuris Theater Festival and Workshop

As part of the National Arts Month Celebration, The Performance Laboratory, Inc. or PerfLab — a community theater group based in Bacolod City celebrates its 7th Kuris Theater Festival and Workshop in different locations on February 18 to 22.

Kuris became an annual convergence of Negros and Panay based theater groups with invited theater practitioners, scholars and artists from other countries and regions in the Philippines to share and present different forms of theatre and performance to the Negrense Community.

Kuris Festival aims to educate and train artists, educators and students through a series of workshops and provide a space for theater artists to showcase their works, strengthen their network and linkages through performances in the four-day event at the University of Saint La Salle, New Government Center – Bacolod, Sacred Heart Seminary, Provincial Capitol – Social Hall and the Negros Museum, all in Bacolod.

The festival’s name came from the Hiligaynon term “Kuris”, which means “scribbles”, “squiggles”, and “sketches”, as PerfLab believes a representation of thoughts, ideas, musings that attempt to articulate the artists’ sensibilities through theater.

The event is a collaboration of PerfLab, Women Playwrights’ International-Philippines and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod Culture and Arts Program in partnership with Teatrokon: West Visayas Theater Network, International Theatre Institute – International Playwright’s Forum (IPF), and National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The festival will feature keynote speech of August Andong (Women Playwrights International President) on “The Importance and Contribution

of Theatre and the Arts to the Creative Economy and Artist Sustainability”, 9th Dramaturgy Workshop, 6th WPI Regional Readathon: Dramatic Reading of Women’s Plays, and 5th WPI Playwriting Development Workshop for Emerging Playwrights and Kuris Play Festival, and will offer workshops on Production Design, Stage Management, Technical Theatre and Movement Dramaturgy.

This 2020, with the theme “Theatre Without Boundaries”, Kuris will be showcasing exciting and new performances from community and school-based performing groups from Bacolod and Iloilo City in various spaces in line with our wish for continued growth, exploration and extending ourselves to the community
