The Department of Science and Technology VI (DOST VI) is setting up for the 2022 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration in Western Visayas from Nov. 17 to 19, 2022.
Carrying the theme, “Agham at Teknolohiya para sa Masigla at Maunlad na Rehiyon”, DOST will showcase its scientific contribution to socio-economic development in the regional celebration as well as inspire and motivate the government and private sectors to support and create similar directions towards continuing advancement of the national economy and improved living conditions for the people in the region.
NSTW Schedule of Activities
Among the 2022 NSTW in Western Visayas highlights are a showcase of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program 4.0 (SETUP 4.0) and the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program, major research and development projects and S&T services, interventions with the private sectors and other government partners, notable projects on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, among other major programs and projects.
With these programs and advocacies as main topics and concepts, the activities lined up are the webinars on STI Support for Enterprise, Industry, and Government, Bakal Lokal Virtual Bazaar, Technology Tour Vlogs, Youth Explorers of Science (YES), and the Idlab Awards (Regional R&D Awards). These activities will be held in both face-to-face and virtual settings.
Furthermore, the 2022 NSTW main event to be hosted by the DOST central office will be held on Nov. 23 to 27, 2022 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City. The event is scheduled every fourth week of November as mandated by Proclamation 780.

The NSTW 2022 in Western Visayas will feature webinars that advocate the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI) support in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), industry, and government.
Tech Talk
The first webinar, Tech Talk, is a collaborative effort of the Department of Science and Technology VI (DOST VI), Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVAARRDEC) and Regional Agri-Aqua Innovation System Enhancement (RAISE) Program. Tech Talk will be an opportunity for technology generators from schools, universities, and colleges (SUCs) in Western Visayas to introduce their commercial-ready technologies to MSMEs and potential adopters. 1E Conversations
On Nov. 18, a two-part webinar, 1E Conversations, which intends to present current and relevant topics to DOST VI stakeholders by industry experts.
In the morning, a webinar on “Food Defense: Protecting your Food Business Against Intentional Contamination” aims to engage participants in in-depth discussions on food fraud and food defense. The webinar will start at 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon and interested participants can register at bit.ly/WebinaronFoodDefense.
Meanwhile, the afternoon webinar entitled “Trends and Updates: Interiors, Inspirations, Furniture and Home Decors and Color Trends” will start at 3:00 p.m. It will cover creative design trends and updates for MSMEs in the gifts and holiday décors (GHD) industry where participants can pick up tips and best practices for product development processes. Becoming Industry 4.0 Ready
From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the webinar on “Journey Towards Becoming Industry 4.0 Ready” will examine how science and technology enhance the innovative capabilities of DOST VI MSME beneficiaries. This webinar will also serve as an opportunity to put the national finalists and regional winners of the 2022 SETUP (Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program) Praise Awards and Best CEST (Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology) Community in the spotlight to highlight the role of S&T in regional development. Philippine Metrology Framework
Lastly, the webinar on “The Role of LGUs in the Philippine Metrology Framework” will explore the role of local governments in the legal metrology under the Philippine system and how DOST interfaces with its framework. Free Webinars for the Youth
In conjuction with the 2022 National Science and Technology Week (2022 NSTW) celebration in Western Visayas, a webinar series geared towards the youth will be held.
As the main activity of the Youth Explorers of Science (YES), three webinars will tackle topics on science communication, science education, and technology integration into entrepreneurship to be aired online on Nov. 17 and 18.
Startups and Technopreneruship
The first webinar, “A Day for Startups and Technopreneurship”, is scheduled for Nov. 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The webinar will cover the integration of technological innovation into 21st-century entrepreneurship wherein attendees can acquire the proper knowledge, skills, competencies, and values to use technological advancements to their fullest potential as a way to establish sustainable businesses in the modern day. These important concepts will be presented and discussed by Mr. Daryl Lasafin from FyrLab Accelerator.
Science Communication and Social Media
The second webinar on Nov. 18, “Science Communication and Social Media”, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon where the prevalence of social media use will be explored as a way to broaden science communication to promote scientific culture among Filipino students and educators. With Mr. Ivan Roblas as resource speaker, attendees will learn how to package science and technology (S&T) content to be engaging throughout various social media platforms. Roblas is a science communicator from DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technologies Research and Development (PCIEERD)
Digital Technologies for Schools
On the same day, the third webinar, “VISSER and STARBOOKS: Digital Technologies for Schools”, will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. VISSER or Versatile Instrumentation System for Science and Education and Research is a modern science kit used to advance the education of senior high school students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand while STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS is a system that makes science education available offline for students in far-flung areas with little to no internet signal or connectivity. Both these systems will be introduced to participating students and educators as a way to make science education more up-to-date and accessible. These digital technologies will be presented by Ms. Marvie V. Naquita from DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) and Mr. Dwight Angelo V. Bruzon from the spin-off company, making.technology Manufacturing Corporation.
